I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand
We have a rich and diverse collection of artefacts to support and enhance teaching and learning in all aspects of curriculum topics and creative projects. We like to think that the collection is as big as your imagination and will really stimulate your creativity!
We promote object handling, as a form of active learning that inspires students, giving them a unique opportunity to use all their senses to engage with a world or original and replica artefacts. Children are surprised by the unfamiliar and also enjoy sharing what they already know. Using artefacts gives children of all ages and abilities the opportunity to 'do' and to 'understand'.
Our objects are used in nursery, primary, secondary and special schools. They can be used to encourage talk and discussion in the class, as well as for research or art purposes.
Teachers of young children use puppets, soft toys and other artefacts for storytelling and bringing stories to life.
Secondary school art teachers borrow objects to create tableaux for still life drawing and painting.
History teachers use both original and replica items to bring their subject to life.
Topics such as 'Water' are imaginatively resourced with objects from across the collection, exploring historical, geographical, religious, domestic and scientific aspects.
And check www.objectlessons.org for a virtual experience around 400 of our objects.
Teachers at subscribing schools can go directly to the Loan Request Form section of this website to complete the online request form. Alternatively, hard copies of the form are available in your school office which can be faxed or posted to us.
Teachers at non-subscribing schools and other users should go to the Using the Service section of this website to find ful details about borrowing arrangements and charges.
Where appropriate, a small number of costumes are provided as part of an artefacts loan box but if you require a larger collection, then please look at the Costumes page on this website.
