Costumes

Looking at pattern and colour? Exploring the characteristics of materials? Investigating life in West Africa? Reading Jane Eyre?

If so, have you thought of using costumes?

We have a wonderful collection of over 800 costumes and accesories from different historica periods and many parts of the world, in both adult and child sizes. They can be borrowed to support teaching and learning across the curriculum, and for school productions.

Looking at clothes and textiles is an important part of thinking about the world – changing fashions and materials can tell us much about customs, climate, technology, economics and power.

Schools find that:

  • history comes to life when the costumes are tried on and modelled in class, or used for role play or re-enactment
  • displays are improved with colourful costumes and fabrics from around the world
  • costumes and accesories can be used as a stimulus for creative writing and literacy work
  • drama productions and drama work can be enriched by with the addition of some high quality costumes

How to access the service

Charges for costumes are £20 + VAT per costume and £5 + VAT per accessory [hats, petticoats, etc.]. A small number of costumes can be included in a standard loan box.

Teachers at subscribing schools can go directly to the Loan Request Form section of this website to complete the online request form. Alternatively, hard copies of the form are available in your school office which can be faxed or posted to us.

Teachers at non-subscribing schools and other users should go to the Using the Service section of this website to find ful details about borrowing arrangements and charges.
