I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand
We promote object handling, an active form of learning that engages and inspires pupils and students and enriches the classroom. The artefacts collection gives children of all ages and abilities opportunities to 'do' and to 'understand' and our objects are used in nursery, primary, secondary and special schools. They can be used to encourage talk and discussion in the class, as well as for research or art purposes.
We have a rich collecting, reflecting cultural diversity. The collection includes: Amazonian masks and Victorian prams; skeletons (some real, some plastic) and chickens made from recycled plastic; oil lamps and Roman coins; divas and menorahs; Benin bronzes and Tudor hose, and much more. We like to see the collection as being as big as your imagination!
Teachers of young children use puppets, soft toys and other artefacts to complement stories.
Secondary school art teachers borrow objects to create tableaux for still life drawing and painting.
History teachers use both original and replica items to bring their subject to life.
Topics such as 'Water' are imaginatively resourced from the collection
A small number of costumes can be provided as part of an artefacts loans, but if you require a larger collection, then please look at the Costumes page on this website.
And check www.objectlessons.org for a virtual experience around 200 of our objects.
