Work in Schools

School libraries

We offer help and advice on the development of school libraries, on classroom book corners and on the selection and use of learning resources.

For subscribing primary and special schools, one half day is provided as part of the service level agreement, and all additional work and work with non-subscribing schools is charged for on a daily rate. This rate is between £100 - 170 per day depending on the nature of the work done. This ranges from the design and layout of new libraries, to stock assessment, revision and purchase, classifying and computerisation.

There is a termly meeting and a training programme for all staff involved in running primary school libraries, and schools wishing to join this group should contact the library.

We recommend that schools computerise their libraries using the Microlibrarian system, and there is one member of staff here who is available to help and support schools with this programme.

For secondary schools, advice and support is available on all library and resources issues including the appointment of staff. There is a half termly meeting and training programme for all secondary school librarians.

The Education Library Service run borough wide shadowing programmes for these two major children's book awards.  All secondary schools take part in the Shadowing Carnegie which runs from May to July each year.  Contact us for details of next year's programme of events.

This is supported by centrally arranged visits from children's writers.
